How to Avoid the Flu

Did you know that the flu is a symptom of vitamin D deficiency?

This would explain why the flu is such a problem in the winter months - it's because people aren't exposed to the sun as much and the UVB rays from the sun are a great source of vitamin D. This would also explain why the further south you go, the cases of the flu decrease. February is peak season for the flu, and even though in my area we have had a very mild winter, people are still getting the flu.

So how do you avoid the flu? It's not a vaccine (I'm not opening that can of worms!), it's vitamin D! According to Life Extension Magazine, 87% of Americans have a vitamin D deficiency. If you live a truly healthy lifestyle and get adequate amounts of vitamin D, I don't think you need to be concerned about "catching" the flu.

Cod liver oil is a great way of maintaining vitamin D blood levels. Think you don't need the cod liver oil because you already take a vitamin D supplement? In most cases, taking an isolated, synthetic vitamin supplement is not a good idea. Our bodies were designed to receive nutrition through the synergy of the combination of nutrients in whole foods.Cod liver oil, for example, is a balanced blend of vitamins A, D, and K.

But beware - not all cod liver oils are alike! The good news is that there is a brand of pure, non-industrialized, fermented cod liver oil out there that is whole food form - Green Pasture's from the great state of Nebraska! A lot of fish oils on the shelves at the store contain synthetic vitamins because the nutrients are destroyed through the industrial heating process. Green Pasture's fermented cod liver oil is not heated and is, in my opinion, the best cod liver oil you can get....but don't take my word for it...do your research! If the fermented cod liver oil is too pricey, there are a few brands out there that do minimal processing and contain only natural ingredients for a fraction of the price!

Here's to your health!
